Founded in 1950,SUMS is one of the oldest and largest universities in Iran. The university is the main collaborator of the nation- wide ministerial program on integrated medical education and services.

Currently SUMS has more than 600 faculties and 5000 students studying in 83 health- related fields including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy ,Public Health, Nursing, Midwifery, Rehabilitation and Health Administration. The University also offers graduate programs in basic medical sciences as well as Nursing,Public Health and pharmacy. It also offers comprehensive residency and fellowship programs in Clinical Medicine and Dentistry. SUMS has been ranked first among Iranian universities of Medical Sciences to publish scientific papers per academic faculty for the last several years. The University also runs a comprehensive service program covering the prevention and treatment of diseases.
